Faroe Islands records highest number of abortions since 2009 with 42 procedures

Last year marked a significant milestone in the Faroe Islands, as it recorded the highest number of abortions since 2009, with a total of 42 procedures. This figure is notably higher than previous years, including 27 recorded in 2022 and just 19 in 2018.

The health authority’s statistics indicate that among the women who underwent abortions last year, 13 were aged between 30 and 34 years, while five were in the younger age group of 15 to 19 years.

In Greenland, the situation was also striking, with 1,034 abortions performed last year—an increase of 21 percent compared to 2022. This number represents the highest recorded in a decade, underscoring a rising trend in abortion rates.
