This week will see highly unstable weather across Finland, according to Yle meteorologist Matti Huutonen. While snow is expected in the northernmost regions, particularly around Kilpisjärvi, this is generally typical for the end of September.

Several areas of rainfall are moving northward across Finland. Meanwhile, warm, moist air is flowing into much of the country, resulting in milder temperatures for this time of year. However, Kilpisjärvi and surrounding areas in Lapland are likely to experience colder conditions.

In the coming days, snow or sleet is forecasted for the border regions with Norway and Sweden, with precipitation expected to spread from the south either tonight or by tomorrow morning. Typically, the first snow reaches northern Finland around this time, so the arrival of snow is not unusual. Huutonen notes that although the beginning of September experienced record warmth, the change to colder weather feels quite drastic.

A weather warning has also been issued for the mountains and roads due to the potential for poor weather conditions. Heavy traffic is anticipated on the Norwegian side, and driving conditions could become challenging if 10 to 20 centimeters of snow falls. In other parts of Lapland, rain is expected.
