Copenhagen introduces moving kit to improve waste sorting during relocations

Moving provides an excellent opportunity to declutter items that are no longer needed and have been gathering dust. However, in Copenhagen, the rush of packing can sometimes lead to improper waste sorting, with many residents neglecting to dispose of waste correctly during their relocations. To address this, the city is introducing a new moving kit aimed at encouraging residents to incorporate proper waste sorting into their moving plans.

Jonas Bjørn Jensen, head of the Technical and Environmental Administration in Copenhagen, emphasized the need for better waste management during moves, stating that it leads to significant CO2 emissions and economic losses. He noted that when reusable or recyclable items are discarded and end up in incineration, it not only contributes to pollution but also complicates the waste collection process.

The moving kit includes various sorting bags for different types of waste, informational materials about waste disposal, and a box that can double as a temporary trash bin. Additionally, the kit offers a moving calendar, stickers to categorize items for selling or donating, and an interim sorting solution for new kitchens.

Each year, around 90,000 households relocate in the municipality, with estimates suggesting that each move generates about 60 kilograms of potential reusable waste. This totals approximately 5,500 tons annually, of which 25% could be recycled.

Jensen stressed that assisting residents with waste sorting during moves is a municipal responsibility, aiming to support environmentally friendly practices. Local resident Anne Rubow expressed enthusiasm for the moving kit, noting its potential to help many people sort waste efficiently amid the chaos of moving. While she acknowledges that the responsibility lies with individuals, she believes that any additional support in the moving process would be beneficial.
