Red lights are flashing at the construction site of the New OUH hospital in Denmark, raising concerns not only about the timeline but also about the project’s financial situation. The latest independent quarterly report shows a shift in the financial status from yellow to red, indicating serious budgetary issues alongside delays.

Karsten Uno Pedersen, Chairman of the Committee for Construction, Procurement, and Green Transition in the Region of Southern Denmark, which oversees the building of the hospital originally scheduled for completion in 2022, acknowledged the project’s delays. “We know the project is delayed—everyone can see that—but we don’t know to what extent. However, we anticipate additional expenses, particularly because the project organization requires an extension,” he stated. While reserves have been allocated, he expressed uncertainty about their sufficiency, contributing to the bleak financial assessment.

The construction is being managed by the Italian general contractor OHPT, supported by the Italian firms CMB and Itinera. Pedersen emphasized the need to reassess the budget: “If it cannot hold, we need to find a solution, whether that involves taking out loans or state financial support.”

Currently, the Region of Southern Denmark is engaged in difficult negotiations with the Italian contractor regarding further construction delays. The updated timeline was expected before the summer break, but this has been postponed due to complex negotiations involving mutual claims between the parties. “They believe we’ve implemented changes that have forced them to redesign, which incurs costs,” Pedersen noted. He refrained from predicting when a new timeline might be established, stressing the importance of finalizing an agreement that will be the ultimate resolution to the current issues.
