Aalborg celebrates success of Plusbus service after light rail plans abandoned

For years, Aalborg dreamed of establishing a light rail system similar to those in Aarhus and Odense, but ultimately, the plans were abandoned. Instead, locals had to settle for an extended bus service known as the ‘Plusbus.’ Now, a year after its launch, Aalborg’s politicians are celebrating their decision to forgo the light rail. Anna Aaen, the Climate and Environment spokesperson for the Enhedslistens party, expressed her initial disappointment over the light rail’s cancellation but now regards the Plusbus as a “blessing in disguise.”

Nearly a decade ago, the mood was different when former Social Democratic Mayor Thomas Kastrup-Larsen criticized the national government for eliminating funding for a light rail in Aalborg, arguing that the city deserved similar support as Aarhus and Odense.

Aalborg’s BRT (Bus Rapid Transit) solution, which the Plusbus is officially labeled, cost 570 million kroner, significantly less than the billions spent on light rail systems in Aarhus and Odense. This substantial cost-saving has brought satisfaction to Aalborg residents, with Aaen noting that while the Plusbus is not free, it offers excellent value for money.

Transport economics professor Mogens Fosgerau supports this view, stating that the Plusbus is far cheaper to operate and almost as beneficial for passengers as a light rail system.

After transporting residents across the city for a year, the Plusbus has proven to be a hit among users. Mathias Bak, a daily commuter to Aalborg University, remarked on the improved space and comfort compared to former city buses. Another user, Noel Mono, called the Plusbus “genial” and “super effective,” highlighting its frequent usage by students.
