Icelandic Coast Guard conducts search in Hornstrandir amid polar bear concerns

The Icelandic Coast Guard is currently conducting a search around the Hornstrandir area amid concerns that more polar bears may be present. The polar bear, which was recently shot, is being transported to a nearby settlement for examination. This action follows confirmation from the local police in the Westfjords that a polar bear had been sighted on Höfðaströnd.

The Coast Guard noted that the logistics regarding where the bear carcass will be taken after the search is completed remain uncertain, as they aim to eliminate any suspicion of additional bears in the vicinity.

In recent weeks, there has been a significant increase in ice floes along the shores of the Westfjords, leading to speculation that the polar bear may have drifted from Greenland to Iceland’s territorial waters on one of these icebergs.
