On Tuesday, a group of young people gathered to discuss issues within Icelandic society, focusing on violence and mental health. At the end of the session, they were asked what changes they believe are necessary for improvement in their community.

The participants expressed a desire for long-term solutions rather than temporary fixes to ongoing problems. They emphasized the need for increased real-life social interactions to replace screen time, addressing the power imbalances and wealth disparities in society, and enhancing youth centers. They advocated for a more compassionate discourse about fellow citizens, fostering trust in the goodness of people, and ensuring quicker interventions for youth facing difficulties.

Estefan Leó Haraldsson highlighted the importance of choosing life over conflict, asserting that the voices of young people should be heard more frequently. “We know a lot,” said Embla Margrét Möller Atladóttir, advocating for their perspectives to be taken seriously.

This candid dialogue reflects a growing awareness among the youth about societal issues, calling for systemic changes that focus on community engagement and the well-being of individuals. The conversation underscores a collective longing for a society that prioritizes empathy and proactive support for its members.
