Hunter sentenced to conditional imprisonment for fatal shooting in Savitaipale

The South Karelia District Court has sentenced a hunter from Lappeenranta to 1.5 years of conditional imprisonment. The conviction stems from a hunting accident that occurred in Savitaipale in the autumn of 2023, which resulted in the death of a local woman. The man’s shotgun, which he was carrying over his shoulder without the safety engaged, discharged accidentally when a dog leapt toward him. In an attempt to prevent the gun from falling, the man grabbed it, but it was not in a firing position at the time. The shotgun blast struck the Savitaipale woman, who succumbed to her injuries.

In its ruling on Thursday, the court classified the hunter’s actions as gross negligence leading to death. The court deemed the act particularly serious because the loaded firearm lacked a safety mechanism engaged and was not involved in an active hunting situation. It remains unclear whether the man’s finger was already inside the trigger guard or moved there when the dog jumped toward him. The manner in which he was holding the weapon made both scenarios plausible.

The sentence is not yet legally binding.
