A high school student who was stabbed on the streets of Oulu is reportedly improving enough for police to interview him over the weekend. According to Janne Koskela, a criminal chief inspector with the Oulu police, the boy remains hospitalized but his condition has stabilized, despite the initially serious circumstances.
Koskela stated that no new or surprising information has emerged from the hearing. The police continue to believe that there is no racist motive behind the stabbing, even though the victim is of foreign descent. “There is no evidence pointing to a racist motive,” Koskela said.
Earlier, the newspaper Kaleva reported that another high school student was present during the stabbing incident. This detail has been confirmed by Koskela, although the police have not provided further comments.
The investigation continues following the life-threatening incident that took place last Monday when the victim was unexpectedly stabbed near Kastelli School and Oulu University Hospital in broad daylight. The victim is a student at Kastelli High School.
A 23-year-old man from Oulu is suspected of the stabbing, with no significant criminal record. He was apprehended near the scene shortly after the event and has since been remanded in custody on suspicion of attempted murder.
The police previously indicated that the suspect provided his perspective on the situation during questioning. They believe the stabbing appears to have been impulsive, and there is no known prior relationship between the suspect and the victim. Currently, the police have no additional information regarding any potential motive as the investigation proceeds with continued interviews and police inquiries.
