Whiplash injuries pose challenges for diagnosis and treatment, experts at University of Turku say

Following a whiplash injury, patients often experience significant neck pain and stiffness, with symptoms manifesting shortly after the incident. Neurological symptoms such as numbness and hypersensitivity can occur, and in severe cases, fractures or ligament tears in the cervical spine may be detected. While most patients see improvement within days to weeks, some experience prolonged issues.

According to Olli Tenovuo, a professor of neurotraumatology at the University of Turku, the area where the skull meets the cervical spine is challenging to investigate. Ligaments that support the neck can be strained in a whiplash event, but traditional X-rays and MRIs may not reveal these injuries. Tenovuo compares standard imaging to taking a lung X-ray to assess heart function, emphasizing that it does not provide insights into the operational state.

Some medical professionals advocate for using functional MRIs to better understand cervical spine movement post-injury. However, Olavi Airaksinen, a professor of physiatrics at the University of Eastern Finland, cautions that such imaging often shows abnormalities in patients without whiplash injuries.

While there is consensus on the limitations of standard diagnostic results, there is debate over their interpretations, leading to a cautious approach in medical practices. Tenovuo expresses concern that some neck patients may receive incorrect diagnoses when their pain is not understood, emphasizing that symptoms can arise from identifiable medical mechanisms rather than being psychosomatic.

Insurance companies may be reluctant to cover claims lacking clear connections to an auto accident, but Tenovuo argues that these disputes rarely affect patient care, except in terms of access to rehabilitation funding. The issue of surgical intervention for whiplash injuries remains contentious, with varied opinions on necessity based on the presence of structural damage. Improved research and imaging techniques are deemed essential for addressing these ongoing debates.
