Firefighting efforts continue in Inari, where three large wildfires are being contained. According to a local journalist, the situation appears grim, but the fire is under control. “The smell of smoke is noticeable atop Jänispää, and the view towards Sevettijärvi and the valley is disheartening. Approximately 11 hectares of underbrush and vegetation have been completely burned,” the journalist reported.
Despite this, the situation on-site remains calm and expectant, with no flames currently visible. Additional firefighting support is anticipated for the afternoon, with around 40 conscripts currently engaged in the efforts.
Help is set to arrive from Kainuu and North Ostrobothnia’s rescue services, contributing around 20 additional personnel. So far, three areas in Inari have been affected by the blazes. “The situation cannot withstand any additional fires,” the journalist warned.
Fire Chief Markus Aarto stated that while the wildfires appear to be under control, there are still active hotspots within the affected areas. “All three areas are currently well managed. I would expect that by the end of the day, we will be ready for mop-up operations.”
Fighting the blazes is complicated by difficult terrain and a shortage of resources. Teams from various contract fire departments across Lapland, North Ostrobothnia, and Kainuu, as well as Defense Forces assistance units, have been mobilized.
Firefighting efforts are being organized in shifts to allow for necessary rest periods. Residents are urged to exercise caution with fire, as open flames are strictly prohibited due to a forest fire warning in the Inari area. Overnight, firefighters focused on monitoring and addressing equipment shortages, resuming active firefighting efforts at dawn. Helicopters have also been deployed for firefighting support.
