AC Oulu faces challenges in identifying individual behind racist comments during match in Oulu

AC Oulu lacks solid evidence regarding the identity of an individual who allegedly made racist comments during an August football match, complicating the police investigation. The incident occurred on August 10 during a Veikkausliiga match between AC Oulu and FC Inter at Raatin Stadium, leading the referee, Mohammad Al-Emara, to halt the game as the remarks were directed at him.

The police are investigating the case as defamation and have requested tips, as the identity of the commenter remains unknown. AC Oulu’s chairman, Tomi Kaismo, had previously stated that the individual had been identified, and the club announced a ban on this person from attending future home matches.

However, AC Oulu’s CEO, Jani Kotikangas, has revealed that further investigations have shown the club cannot definitively prove who made the racist remarks during the match. Consequently, the imposed ban could not be enforced. “We are in a situation where it’s this person’s word against ours,” Kotikangas noted, indicating the lack of sufficient evidence.

The police have reached out to AC Oulu to determine if they have any means of identifying the individual. Kotikangas pointed out that in Finland, there is no identification system for spectators as found in many European leagues, and there were no cameras at the stadium to gather conclusive evidence. “We have a suspect, but no proof. That’s why we couldn’t pursue the matter further,” he explained.

In response to the incident, AC Oulu has set up a hotline for reporting potential harassment or racist behavior at Raatin Stadium. Kotikangas expressed hope that concerted efforts will be made to eliminate such incidents. “It’s truly unfortunate that this happened in our stands, but even more regrettable that it occurs anywhere,” he stated.
