The Confederation of Icelandic Employers has expressed overall satisfaction with the national budget proposal presented by the Minister of Finance. However, the organization’s director emphasized the need for increased fiscal restraint.

Positive aspects of the budget included a commitment to allocate more funds for vocational education. The director noted, “Overall, we perceive this reasonably well; there are positive elements that we welcome, along with various priorities. However, we align with the Minister and the government on the crucial task of reducing inflation and interest rates.”

The director highlighted that there should have been more restraint in government finances, particularly concerning the increase in public sector jobs. This measure could alleviate pressures in the labor market and pave the way for lower growth rates. “That said,” he added, “it is indeed positive to see increased funding directed towards vocational schools and training to accommodate more students. We know that many applications have been rejected in recent years, sometimes up to a thousand per year.”

Moreover, continued tax incentives for research and development in the intellectual property sector were also acknowledged as positive. “This sector is the fourth pillar of exports and could become the most valuable by the end of the decade,” he remarked. He also welcomed increased investment in transportation infrastructure, stating, “The condition of these is deteriorating in many areas of the country.”

Overall, government policies supporting the supply side of the economy should remain in focus, according to the director, while calling for additional fiscal discipline in light of the current economic situation.
