Warm weather sets records in Kotka as locals enjoy summer-like conditions
Despite it being September, the weather in Kotka remains unusually warm, with temperatures surpassing 30 degrees Celsius, setting a new record for this time of year. The summer-like conditions have lured many outside to enjoy various activities, particularly swimming.
Emmi Niiranen, a local resident, expressed delight at the warm water, saying it felt as comfortable as in July. Today, the temperature of the water at Mansikkalahti beach was reported to be 18 degrees Celsius. Others like Tomi Valkonen, who was in the midst of his vacation, lamented that his time off fell in September but quickly changed his tune, stating the weather was now ideal.
Sanna Kukkonen and Hans Puskala visited the beach for morning coffee rather than a swim. Puskala emphasized the importance of enjoying these last warm days of summer.
While warm weather is a treat, Puskala voiced concerns that rising autumn temperatures could benefit invasive species.
The pleasant weather also attracted boaters. Suvi and Juha Veini, along with Satu and Ari Auvinen, prepared for a one-night trip to a nearby island to fish, grill, and sauna—activities they hoped to enjoy under favorable wind conditions.
Kalle and Eetu Hietamies planned to head by boat to Ulko-Tammio, considering the wind speed of 2-6 m/s optimal for their small boat.
Families took advantage of the warmth, with many engaging in outdoor activities, like Iced cream enjoyed by Luka Saarilehto and his grandmother at Katariina Marine Park. As summer activities continue, forecasts indicate sunny weather will persist into early next week.
