Eyelash extensions linked to severe eye issues for woman in Finland

A week ago, Malla Eväsoja began experiencing severe discomfort in her left eye, to the extent that she could not keep it open, and her vision became blurry. An emergency room visit revealed that the symptoms were caused by eyelash extensions, which she had been using for about a year and a half. Typically, she applied small clusters to the outer corners of her upper eyelids but occasionally opted for full-length lashes.

The adhesive used to attach the extensions had clogged the glands beneath her upper eyelid that produce oil to lubricate the eyes, resulting in dry and inflamed conditions. Additionally, the false lashes were pressing her natural eyelashes downward. This led to wear on the corneal surface due to friction between the lashes and her dry eyelid.

An ophthalmic surgeon, Tiina Leivo, noted that issues caused by eyelash extensions have been increasingly common at clinics for several years. Common symptoms include allergic reactions to the adhesive, swelling of the eyelids, and excessive tearing or redness. More severe complications can arise, such as distorted eyelash growth and permanent changes to the eyelash direction.

Malla’s symptoms were classified as unusually severe. Her doctor recommended a hiatus from using eyelash extensions for several months and prescribed both anti-inflammatory and lubricating eye drops. Fortunately, her eye pain has since subsided, and her vision is returning to normal. Malla has decided against using eyelash extensions in the near future due to fear of permanently losing her natural eyelashes.

Tiina Leivo understands the appeal of eyelash extensions and provides guidance for safer application, emphasizing the importance of professional application and caution with adhesive to avoid direct contact with the eyes.
