Volcanic ash cloud prompts caution in Vogar, Iceland

A volcanic ash cloud is currently hovering over Vogar, prompting local residents to exercise caution. The pollution from the eruption near the Sundhnúks crater row is being carried by southerly winds directly across the area of Vatnsleysuströnd today. Residents are advised to refrain from outdoor exercise or strenuous activities.

Air quality measurements indicate poor conditions in southwestern Iceland due to emissions from the eruption. According to the Environmental Agency’s air quality monitors, Vogar is experiencing some of the highest particulate pollution levels, which could be harmful. Individuals with lung or heart conditions are particularly advised to stay indoors.

Although there was some pollution in the capital area this morning, it is gradually decreasing. The wind direction is expected to change, moving more towards the north, which means the ash could linger throughout the day in Vogar. Experts recommend that residents can still move between buildings and attend schools or work, but outdoor activities such as football practices or running should be avoided, especially for young children, who should remain indoors.
