Fire breaks out in residential buildings in Garður and Akranes, Iceland

Fire broke out in residential buildings in Garður and Akranes, Iceland, last night. Fortunately, residents of both locations escaped unharmed. The cause of the fires is currently unknown, and both the Suðurnes and Vesturland police are investigating.

In Garður, the fire ignited on the upper floor of a house shortly after 3 AM. A resident on the upper level managed to exit the building before firefighters arrived, and he is reportedly uninjured. The lower floor, which houses a guesthouse, was vacant at the time. Firefighting efforts concluded around 6 AM, but the property sustained significant damage, necessitating the breaking of the roof to extinguish the flames. Authorities are still looking into the fire’s origin.

A separate fire occurred in a domestic apartment on the lower level of a two-story building in Akranes the previous evening. The alarm was raised just after 10:30 PM. One individual was present in the apartment during the incident but was able to exit safely despite heavy smoke. Firefighting operations were successful, although significant damage resulted. Fortunately, no other apartments in the building were affected. The investigation into this fire is also ongoing.

Both incidents highlight the importance of fire safety measures, as the quick actions of the residents and fire services helped prevent injuries.
