Parents alarmed after boy threatens younger children with knife at Síðuskóli playground in Akureyri

Parents in Akureyri are expressing concerns for their children’s safety after a boy threatened younger children with a knife on a school playground last weekend. The manager of the Child Protection Services in Eyjafjörður emphasizes that such cases are taken seriously, although finding the appropriate solutions can take time.

The police were summoned to the Síðuskóli playground due to a report of a minor using a knife to intimidate two younger children. Following this incident, concerned parents met with law enforcement to seek action. This was not the first instance of threatening behavior from the boy in question, prompting police to increase patrols in the area.

Birkir Örn Stefánsson, head of the Síðuskóli Parent Association, stresses the importance of children feeling secure in their surroundings. He acknowledges some parents’ fears regarding their children’s safety after the incident and assures that these concerns are communicated to the relevant authorities.

Vilborg Þórarinsdóttir, head of Child Protection Services, notes that while specific cases cannot be publicly discussed, it may give the impression that no action is being taken. She reassures parents that their concerns are valid and that serious issues are treated with the utmost gravity, with ongoing work to resolve individual cases.

She also highlights the growing issue of youth carrying weapons and calls for a collective community response. It is crucial that concern and feedback are directed toward broader societal solutions rather than focusing solely on individual situations. Child protection and police services collaborate closely to address the challenges posed by minors’ behavior, and while some cases can be resolved quickly, others require more time and effort.
