Minister Guðlaugur Þór Þórðarson accused of speeding in government vehicle in Sauðárkrókur

The minister of environment, energy, and climate, Guðlaugur Þór Þórðarson, appears to have been driven in a government vehicle at 110 kilometers per hour, exceeding the speed limit of 90 kilometers on a national highway in Sauðárkrókur. This was captured and shared by the minister on his Instagram account during the cabinet’s summer meeting.

Pétur Björnsson, the chief of police for Northwest Iceland, stated that determining whether the minister’s driver was genuinely speeding is challenging. He noted that factors such as the car model and tire size could influence the situation, especially without measurements taken with certified police equipment. He expressed hope that the driver would report to the police station and admit to the traffic violation, although he acknowledged that this type of admission is rare.

The service center for the Icelandic government clarified that the vehicle shown in the image is not an official government car, nor is the driver affiliated with their operations. Speeding by 20 kilometers over the limit could result in a fine of up to 50,000 Icelandic krónur. It is worth mentioning that the minister’s controversial post has since been deleted from his Instagram account.
