Deputy Mayor Ilkka Sasi cleared of criminal allegations in Tampere

Ilkka Sasi, the Deputy Mayor of Tampere, expressed his relief at being cleared of suspicions related to criminal activities. He stated, “The decision was very much anticipated for me. Of course, I am relieved that we now have a conclusion to a matter that has received extensive public attention.”

On Monday, District Prosecutor Joni Köykkä announced that Sasi would not face charges, concluding there were no likely grounds to support the allegations of sexual harassment and alcohol-related offenses leveled against him.

In early July, the Tampere City Council established a temporary committee to investigate Sasi’s trustworthiness in light of the accusations. The committee is tasked with assessing whether the Deputy Mayor has lost the council’s confidence and the rationale behind any such loss.

Sasi is keenly awaiting feedback from the city council, which is set to convene on Monday to provide comments to this committee. He noted that the committee has sought the council’s input.

Mikko Aaltonen, the chair of the temporary committee, had previously stated that the decision not to prosecute would not necessarily impact their operations.

The next steps regarding Sasi’s situation rest with the National Coalition Party and the Swedish People’s Party’s council group. Anne-Mari Jussila, chair of this coalition, announced that they will revisit Sasi’s status in September. He was expelled from the council group earlier in August due to concerns over his conduct and trustworthiness.

Sasi remarked that his future lies in the hands of the coalition party and mentioned receiving many encouraging messages following the prosecutor’s announcement. He also shared that he had spent the previous night in the hospital due to physical issues but plans to return to work soon.
