Minor earthquakes recorded on Reykjanes Peninsula as volcanic gas disperses across Iceland

Minor earthquakes have been recorded on the Reykjanes Peninsula, generating volcanic gas that is noticeable across the country. A specialist in natural hazards from the Icelandic Meteorological Office explains that the calm winds today have allowed the volcanic haze to disperse widely without dissipating completely.

However, the volcanic gas has not been detected in significant concentrations by the Environmental Agency’s air quality monitors, alleviating concerns about its impact on public health. The meteorologist notes that it takes only a small amount for the gas to become visible; it does not need to be measurable to be seen.

Pollution levels have only been noted in the southwestern region, particularly around the Reykjanes Peninsula area. In places like Grindavík, Njarðvík, Sandgerði, and Selfoss, sensitive individuals, such as those with asthma or other underlying lung and heart conditions, may experience symptoms due to the volcanic haze.
