Ash from volcanic eruption reaches Njarðvík following Stóra-Skógfell activity

Reports indicate that ash from the volcanic eruption northeast of Stóra-Skógfell has reached the town of Njarðvík. These fine glass-like shards, known as “nornahár,” are produced during volcanic activity and can be carried by the wind.

Minney Sigurðardóttir, a natural hazard specialist at the Icelandic Meteorological Office, noted that the eruption’s plumes were substantial yesterday, which likely led to the formation of nornahár that were then blown towards Njarðvík. While nornahár is not considered dangerous, it can scratch car paint.

In addition, there is significant volcanic haze over the capital region. Minney mentioned that while the haze is clearly visible, it is measured to be low. Air quality remains adequate and poses a risk mainly to the most sensitive individuals, who are advised to avoid strenuous outdoor activities.
