Woman rescued from Silfra river at Þingvellir in Iceland after losing consciousness

A woman in her seventies was rescued from the Silfra river at Þingvellir this afternoon after losing consciousness. Garðar Már Garðarsson, chief inspector with the South Iceland Police, reported that when the woman was pulled from the water, she was unconscious but still had a pulse and was breathing. Fortunately, she regained consciousness relatively quickly, although she was disoriented.

A search and rescue helicopter from the Icelandic Coast Guard was dispatched after the incident was reported, transporting the woman to the emergency department of Landspítali in Fossvogur. The helicopter landed shortly before 4:30 PM. The cause of the woman’s loss of consciousness remains unclear.
