Iceland Prime Minister Bjarni Benediktsson confirms coalition stability until elections in September 2025

The Prime Minister of Iceland, Bjarni Benediktsson, has indicated that the current government coalition is expected to remain in place, with elections anticipated in September 2025. He emphasized that there are no indications of upcoming elections this autumn or winter and that any changes would depend on the political climate as the term progresses.

During an interview, Benediktsson expressed that it would be most suitable for the leader of the largest party to take over the government leadership following Katrín Jakobsdóttir’s decision to run for president. He affirmed his belief that the coalition would last the entirety of its term and reiterated that the focus should be on fulfilling responsibilities until the scheduled elections.

He acknowledged the challenges of governing, noting that while the support for his party, the Independence Party, may fluctuate in polls, it is crucial to continue working on the issues at hand rather than prematurely triggering elections due to temporary dips in popularity. Benediktsson also mentioned the upcoming party council meeting and the national congress, highlighting the importance of the party’s work in the months ahead.

As for his political future, he stated that he would assess whether he has the passion to seek another term as elections loom. He expressed that this self-assessment would consider what is best for both the party and himself. His emphasis remains on addressing the duties of governance and maintaining the coalition stability until the electoral process begins next year.
