Significant subsidence raises flood concerns at Grindavík harbor in Iceland

The harbor in Grindavík has experienced significant subsidence, with measurements indicating a drop of up to 40 centimeters at its most affected points. Officials from the Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration conducted measurements, prompting discussions on necessary measures to protect infrastructure around the harbor. Sigurður Arnar Kristmundsson, the harbor master, emphasized the importance of taking all possible steps to maintain the integrity of the area, stating, “The heart of Grindavík beats here.”

Due to the recent changes, there is now a risk of flooding in Grindavík harbor, particularly as conditions may worsen tomorrow evening. Divers have inspected the dock area, and despite the observed subsidence, no damage has been noted. The priority remains to safeguard critical installations near the harbor, such as electrical substations, as water and electricity do not mix well. Additionally, structures on the breakwater may also be at risk.

Sigurður noted that raising all the docks is a significant undertaking and suggested that perhaps experiencing a flood might provide clearer insights into the most effective response strategies moving forward. As local authorities assess the situation, they are focused on ensuring the protection of vital infrastructure in Grindavík.
