Ice collapse on Breiðamerkurjökull leaves one dead and two missing as search efforts continue in Iceland

A section of ice collapsed on Breiðamerkurjökull yesterday while a group of 25 tourists was exploring an ice cave. One individual was pronounced dead at the scene, while another was airlifted to a hospital in Reykjavík and is not in critical condition. Efforts continue to locate two other members of the group who are still missing.

Search operations paused late last night but resumed this morning, involving several teams that work in shifts due to the strenuous conditions. The challenging terrain has made it difficult to transport equipment, necessitating manual labor.

Limited information about the participants in the expedition complicated the search efforts. The tour company indicated that 25 people were in the group but did not provide a complete list of names. Initially, it was believed that two individuals were trapped beneath the ice after rescue operations failed to locate them. Authorities have since clarified that all 23 individuals accounted for were indeed part of the expedition.

The police have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident and emphasized the need for stricter regulations regarding ice cave and glacier tours. They highlighted that there is currently no framework prohibiting access to the glacier.

Search teams will continue their work today. Conditions on the glacier are said to be good for searching, although the landscape remains hazardous. Rescue workers are being monitored closely to ensure their safety as they dig through the ice.
