Oulu police suspect arson after fire at Maikkula Manor
The Oulu police suspect that a fire that broke out late Friday night at Maikkula Manor was an act of arson. According to reports, Crime Commissioner Ilkka Riikola confirmed there are grounds for a criminal investigation.
“The investigation has been underway over the weekend, and technical examinations are continuing. Based on the findings, we suspect arson,” Riikola stated.
The emergency services received an alert about the fire at Maikkula Manor at 1:45 AM. Firefighting efforts took place throughout Friday morning, resulting in the destruction of a gathering space adjacent to the manor’s main building, which dates back to the 1830s. Additional damage occurred to several sauna buildings along the riverbank. The structure housing the kitchen, Lohisali, Korsutupa, and Korsusauna was rendered unusable. Fire also spread to the riverside smoke sauna and the nearby Siikapirtti.
Fortunately, the fire department reported that there were no injuries. However, the economic damage from the loss of the buildings is expected to be significant. The structures that were destroyed were primarily from the 2000s.
