Search and Rescue Operations Ongoing at Breiðamerkurjökull

Search operations will continue at Breiðamerkurjökull for two foreign tourists who became trapped under ice when a glacier wall collapsed on them. Two individuals were rescued from under the ice; however, one of them was immediately pronounced dead.

A group of 25 was on a guided ice cave tour when the incident occurred. Emergency responders have established a command center near the site, supported by strong lighting to aid their efforts under challenging conditions. The Coast Guard helicopter has been transporting personnel and equipment to and from the glacier.

Rescue workers have confirmed that one of the four trapped individuals was found deceased at the scene, while another is hospitalized in Reykjavik, reported to be in stable condition. Efforts to locate the other two still trapped beneath the ice will continue in daylight, as it was deemed unsafe to proceed overnight.

Authorities emphasize the ongoing rescue effort’s significance and the need for heightened caution in glacier areas, particularly in light of the recent accident.
