Search and Rescue Efforts on Breiðamerkurjökull

Search operations will continue on Breiðamerkurjökull for two foreign tourists who got trapped under ice debris when a glacier wall collapsed over them. Two individuals were rescued from the ice, but one was unfortunately pronounced dead on the scene.

A large-scale emergency center was established at Hof in Öræfi for the unaffected members of the tourist group. The site was illuminated with powerful spotlights to aid rescuers working in challenging conditions. The Coast Guard helicopter was deployed to transport people and equipment to and from the glacier. At the time of the incident, a group of 25 people was on an organized ice cave exploration tour.

One of the four individuals buried under the ice was declared dead immediately. Another is hospitalized in Reykjavik, with his condition reported as stable. The search for the remaining two trapped individuals will resume at daylight; it was deemed unsafe to continue the search overnight.

Efforts are underway to safely locate the tourists, while authorities are addressing concerns regarding the natural hazards present in the region. The tragic event highlights the risks involved in glacier tourism, drawing attention to the need for enhanced safety measures for adventure activities in such dynamic environments.
