City council representative from Iceland’s Left-Green Movement rejects bullying allegations from People’s Party and Socialist Party

A city council representative from the Left-Green Movement has rejected allegations of bullying made by members of the People’s Party and the Socialist Party during municipal council meetings. He emphasized that council members should be able to engage in discussions on various issues with mutual trust.

Hjálmar Sveinsson, representing Iceland’s Left-Green Movement, dismissed all accusations of bullying that arose during city council and advisory meetings. He stated that significant exchanges of views naturally occur at such meetings where diverse political perspectives are discussed, asserting that discussions should remain confidential.

Ásta Þ. Skjalddal Guðjónsdóttir, a deputy for the Socialist Party, noted in a letter to the city council president that Hjálmar had criticized several proposals and inquiries from the People’s Party during a meeting of the Environment and Planning Committee last week. She alleges that he mocked Kolbrún Baldursdóttir, a representative of the People’s Party, suggesting that the majority has more important matters to address than proposals from a council member with only a handful of votes backing them.

Hjálmar insisted on the necessity of being able to express opinions at closed city meetings without those disputes immediately reaching the media, criticizing the practice as improper.

Ásta commented earlier today that she wished the letter had been discussed in the executive committee before being shared publicly, noting that she was unaware it had been released.
