Heavy rainfall in the Strandir region has caused significant disruptions, including landslides and rising water levels. A landslide occurred on a road near Veiðileysu, blocking access along the Strandavegur highway in Árneshreppur, located in the northern Westfjords. As a result of the heavy rain, many rivers and streams in the area are experiencing substantial swelling, and a yellow weather warning is in effect for northern Iceland due to the continuing precipitation.

Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and have reported extensive water flowing over various roads in Árneshreppur, raising concerns about potential rockfalls. The local river, Bæjarlækur, is one of several rivers that have risen significantly since yesterday’s rainfall.

Inspection teams from the Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration have arrived on site to assess the damage and have arranged for heavy machinery to help clear the roadway. The government is taking precautions to ensure public safety as conditions may continue to deteriorate due to ongoing adverse weather.
