River flow in Skaftá increases following glacier outburst flood in Iceland

In the last 24 hours, river flow in Skaftá has slightly increased due to a glacier outburst flood that initiated on Tuesday evening. As of now, the flood has not impacted any roads in the area.

Currently, the flow rate at Sveinstind measures nearly 200 cubic meters per second. This is comparable to significant summer flow, although it remains on the lower end compared to peak flows from previous glacier outburst floods. It has yet to be confirmed if the flood originates from the Vestari-Skaftárkatli, which is known to produce floods that don’t reach extreme peak flow, but last for extended periods, typically one to two weeks.
