Flooding affects homes in Siglufjörður as firefighters battle heavy rainfall in Iceland

Significant flooding has occurred in Siglufjörður today, affecting eight homes and overwhelming local firefighters who are working tirelessly to pump water out. The fire department received its first call early this morning after substantial rainfall led to water entering residences.

According to the head of the Fjallabyggð Fire Department, the area has experienced an extraordinary amount of rain since yesterday, with recorded precipitation in Siglufjörður reaching 119 millimeters in the last 24 hours, compared to 97 millimeters in the nearby Ólafsfjörður. The sustained rainfall has particularly impacted Siglufjörður.

Adding to the woes, one of three local drainage pipes malfunctioned, exacerbating the flooding situation. Police have reported that there are now six to eight emergency calls related to flooding during the incident.

The fire department is employing seven pump vehicles to mitigate further damage, although it is currently too early to assess the extent of the devastation. The head of the fire brigade stated, “It’s impossible to estimate the damage at this moment; the event is still ongoing. We have a significant number of pump vehicles working to clear the water.”

As of this afternoon, firefighters are still actively engaged in their efforts, and the continuous rain is complicating their task. The situation remains fluid, with crews attempting to manage water levels to prevent additional flooding.
