Severe flooding impacts Siglufjörður as rain continues to fall

Severe rainfall has led to flooding in Siglufjörður, where water has infiltrated the basements of at least six homes. The local wastewater system is struggling, with one pump broken and another overwhelmed by the intense deluge.

Fire service trucks from Fjallabyggð, Akureyri, and Dalvík are currently working in Siglufjörður, overwhelmed by the steady heavy rain. More than 100 millimeters of rain have fallen since last night, surpassing the total rainfall in Reykjavík for the entire month of July.

Efforts are underway to repair the malfunctioning pump located in Eyrinni, Siglufjörður, with all available pumping vehicles actively deployed, according to local officials. However, the current situation remains critical, with the volume of water in the drainage system increasing. “It seems that more rain is continuing to fall rather than slowing down,” stated the local mayor.

Fire services are struggling to reduce the water levels in the basements, and access to the broken pump, which is submerged, is proving difficult. The extent of the damage remains unclear, but reports confirm that water has entered multiple homes, with officials anticipating that more may be affected.

The Icelandic Meteorological Office warns that the rain is expected to persist until around 6 PM. Authorities are advising residents to check their basements for flooding and exercise caution while driving on Siglufjarðarveg due to the risk of landslides.
