Vapaavuori announces withdrawal from Helsinki mayoral race

Jan Vapaavuori has announced that he will not participate in the mayoral race in Helsinki. The former mayor, who held the position from 2017 to 2021, stated during an interview on Yle’s morning program that various reasons make it an inappropriate time for him to enter the competition.

Vapaavuori declined to elaborate in an interview with Yle but explained to Helsingin Sanomat that he prefers to avoid a job that demands around-the-clock commitment and requires full dedication from morning until evening. Following Juhana Vartiainen’s announcement that he would not seek re-election, Vapaavuori had been a subject of speculation regarding potential candidacy.

Just a week prior, Vapaavuori indicated in a message on platform X that he was still considering the possibility. He expressed to Helsingin Sanomat that he believes the shift to a mayoral model was a mistake, noting that during his tenure, he felt that 80% of his work consisted of operational management, with only 20% being political leadership.

In addition to his role as mayor, Vapaavuori has also served as the Chairman of the Finnish Olympic Committee since 2020. Chairman elections are set to take place this autumn. During the interview, he indicated uncertainty regarding whether he would run for re-election as chairman.
