Support for Daniel Sazonov strong among Helsinki city council members ahead of mayoral election

Support for Daniel Sazonov, 31, the deputy mayor running in the Helsinki mayoral election, appears to be strong within the city council group. Out of 19 council members contacted, 17 described Sazonov as a good candidate for mayor, while two declined to comment. The council group comprises 22 members.

According to Maarit Vierus, vice-chair of the Helsinki district, the opinions of council members are significant in selecting a mayoral candidate, though the Helsinki district itself will make the official nomination. Council member Juha Hakola believes that Sazonov’s youth should not be seen as a limitation. “He brings a youthful perspective to the work,” Hakola stated, adding that Sazonov has demonstrated excellent capability in his role as deputy mayor.

Sazonov has played a significant role in the party, particularly in budget negotiations for the city. He is currently the only candidate who has expressed interest in running for the mayoral position from the National Coalition Party. The party is set to announce its candidate on September 9.

Atte Kaleva, a city council member from the National Coalition Party, views Sazonov positively but suggests that broader political experience could be beneficial. Kaleva hopes to see more individuals interested in the mayoral role, as competition can signify a healthy democratic process. He advocates for a cultural shift in the district meetings, encouraging discussions and voting regarding potential candidates.

Council member Arja Karhuvaara wishes for candidates from outside political insiders to bring fresh ideas to the city’s administration. While she agrees Sazonov is an excellent option, fellow council member Mirita Saxberg also hopes for more contenders in the race. However, Sini Korpinen feels that having multiple candidates isn’t necessary, stating that one very good candidate is sufficient.
