Cucumber shortage hits Iceland amid TikTok salad trend
Currently, there is a notable shortage of cucumbers in Iceland, which may be linked to a surge in popularity for cucumber salad on social media, particularly TikTok. Over 150,000 videos featuring cucumber salad have been shared on the platform, with influencers around the globe promoting the dish.
Local culinary influencer Helga Margrét Gunnarsdóttir has also faced challenges finding cucumbers, a situation echoed by others. According to the Association of Horticultural Producers, the shortage is real, though it’s uncertain if TikTok is directly responsible for it. In response, producers are ramping up their cucumber production.
The increase in sales isn’t limited to cucumbers. Following the social media craze, sales of sesame oil, rice vinegar, and fish sauce have also reportedly tripled at local grocery chain Krónan. Some stores are running low on sesame oil due to the heightened demand, and online searches for these items have surged by up to 200%, according to marketing expert Rúnar Kristmannsson from Krónan.
In light of these trends, grocery chains are taking proactive steps to monitor emerging demands and adjust inventory accordingly. For example, when iced coffee gained popularity, Krónan quickly expanded its product offerings, including various syrups, glasses, and straws, to enhance the shopping experience.
Social media’s influence on consumer trends has drastically changed marketing strategies, making it crucial for businesses to stay attuned to what resonates with their audiences.
