Plumbers see surge in demand during hot water supply repairs in Reykjavik, Iceland

In the capital region of Iceland, plumbing professionals are experiencing a surge of work due to ongoing repairs on the hot water supply system, which serves half of the area’s residents. The utility company, Veitur, is currently engaged in substantial repair work on its hot water pipelines. Böðvar Ingi Guðbjartsson, the chairperson of the Plumbers’ Association, expressed hope that these extensive projects will raise awareness about the hot water systems among the public.

Currently, around half of the residents in the capital area are without hot water while the repairs are underway. Guðbjartsson noted that members of his association have received multiple requests for assistance from customers and acquaintances for help during the disruption. He emphasized the need for greater public understanding of home heating systems.

“There is generally little or no knowledge about these systems among Icelanders,” he remarked. “We need to use this opportunity to promote awareness of these heating systems. People should know what systems they have and ensure that monitoring devices are properly labeled, with good access made available to them. Everyone should know where to turn off the intake valve, especially in case of emergencies.”

According to Veitur, the repairs are progressing as scheduled, with full pressure expected to be restored to the system by midday tomorrow.
