Hot water outage affects residents in Kópavogur and Hafnarfjörður during pipeline maintenance in Iceland

Maintenance work on a hot water pipeline in the capital area is proceeding according to schedule, according to a spokesperson for the local utility company. The draining of the South Line 2 is nearing completion, and construction will continue afterward. In the meantime, a significant portion of the population in the capital region is without hot water.

The affected areas include Kópavogur, Hafnarfjörður, Garðabær, Álftanes, Norðlingaholt, Breiðholt, Almannadalur, and Hólmsheiði. The hot water line was shut off at 10 PM last night, leaving about half of the city’s residents and one-third of the national population without access to hot water.

The spokesperson noted that the project is progressing well, and people have generally been well-prepared for the situation, resulting in fewer emergency calls to the utility service. Local fire departments responded to a few incidents of leaks due to the shutdown.

Work on South Line 2 is expected to continue for approximately 24 hours. If everything goes as planned, water will be pumped back into the line by tomorrow morning, with full pressure anticipated by midday. Residents are encouraged to monitor the progress of the repairs on the utility company’s website.
