Fire department responds to water leaks in Kópavogur and Hafnarfjörður

The capital area’s fire department has responded to at least three water leaks in Kópavogur and Hafnarfjörður this evening, following the shutdown of hot water supply to large parts of the region. Sigurjón Hendriksson, a fire chief in the area, reported that while the leaks are generally minor, some have caused damage to heating systems.

The most significant leak occurred in Hamraborg in Kópavogur, where 85 square meters of office space was flooded. The leak was discovered when water started seeping down to the floor below. Sigurjón explained that they had halted the inflow of water and the fire department is now working to remove the accumulated water.

As of 10 PM tonight, the heat supply to a section called Suðuræð in the capital area has been cut off, resulting in a lack of hot water in nearly all of Kópavogur, as well as Hafnarfjörður, Garðabær, Álftanes, Norðlingaholt, Breiðholt, Almannadal, and Hólmsheiði. Residents are advised to expect hot water shortages until at least noon on Wednesday and are encouraged to review guidelines on the Veitur website regarding coping with the lack of hot water, particularly to prevent damage.
