Chief Public Prosecutor of Iceland rules Helgi Magnús Gunnarsson can keep laptop and keys during ongoing case

The Chief Public Prosecutor of Iceland, Sigríður Friðjónsdóttir, has decided that Helgi Magnús Gunnarsson, the Deputy Chief Public Prosecutor, does not have to return his work laptop and keys as previously requested, until his case is resolved in the Ministry of Justice. This confirmation comes in response to inquiries from news outlets.

Earlier today, Helgi Magnús received an email from the Chief Public Prosecutor’s office requesting the return of his laptop, keys, and parking access. Helgi expressed confusion over this demand, noting that his case is still under consideration by the minister.

Sigríður explained the request by referencing a letter sent to Helgi on July 29, indicating that while his case is being reviewed by the Minister of Justice, his work contributions were not required. She further noted that although there was a basis for the request due to the reassignment of his duties to other prosecutors, Helgi is not obliged to submit the items until his case has been processed.

Minister of Justice Guðrún Hafsteinsdóttir stated she was unaware of the request for Helgi Magnús to surrender his work materials. She confirmed that his case is still pending within her office, where she is seeking advice both inside and outside the Ministry. She indicated that a conclusion might take several days but is unlikely to be reached before the end of the week, as Helgi is expected to return from vacation on Friday.
