Research aimed at removing oil from the wreck of the battleship Ilmarinen concludes today, according to Finland’s Environmental Institute and the Ministry of the Environment. Investigations conducted by the Navy vessel Louhi began on Monday. Preliminary studies on the wreck, which sank over 80 years ago, were carried out last year, revealing that oil droplets were regularly surfacing from the hull. It is estimated that around 100,000 liters of light fuel oil are contained within the wreck’s tanks. A leak could pose a significant threat to marine wildlife.
