Dennis Holm, the Minister for Fisheries, plans to tighten antitrust regulations in the fishing industry. This means lowering the threshold for how much fishery resources a single company can own.
Uni Holm Johannesen, a representative from the Social Democratic Party, indicates that these regulations should be strengthened before the government imposes a usage obligation on mackerel. This adjustment would require bottom fishery operators to catch their mackerel quotas themselves rather than selling them. The goal is to prevent quota consolidation in the hands of a few companies.
However, Hans Ellefsen, a lecturer in economics, argues that this may not be a particularly good idea.
