Social Democratic leader Magdalena Andersson is trying to regain the initiative in government formation, but if the Left Party maintains its demands for ministerial posts, the outcome could be either a government led by Moderate Party leader Ulf Kristersson or a snap election, SVT political commentator Mats Knutson writes in an analysis.
Knutson says the Social Democrats have increasingly become dependent on the Centre Party and the Left Party, whose positions are incompatible. He says the two parties will determine how the process ends.
He also notes that the Centre Party took a similar approach in 2018, though negotiations were then conducted largely out of public view. This time, leading politicians are making demands and issuing ultimatums openly.
