Sweden’s Social Democrats want to form a government with the Centre Party and the Green Party, with the Left Party supporting it from outside the cabinet, SVT reports. Social Democratic leader Magdalena Andersson said the Left Party could exert influence without holding ministerial posts.
“I want to work over the coming week towards a government consisting of the Social Democrats, the Centre Party and the Green Party, in close cooperation with the Left Party, to implement the policies the Swedish people voted for,” Andersson said at a press conference.
Andersson said she had spoken with all three parties on Sunday but would not discuss their responses. She said the Left Party could help ensure its policies are carried out through other means, such as having staff in the government offices or taking part in the preparation of policy proposals.
The Centre Party’s leader, Elisabeth Thand Ringqvist, said she would wait for the Social Democrats and the Moderate Party to present their full policy package before commenting. The Centre Party has asked both parties to set out their policies and explain how they would secure support for them.
Left Party deputy leader Ida Gabrielsson wrote on X that the Social Democrats and the Centre Party knew the Left Party’s congress had decided it must join the government. She said the decision could not be changed and suggested Thand Ringqvist wanted to govern with support from the Sweden Democrats.
The Sweden Democrats said on Friday they would drop their demand for ministerial posts in order to support a centre-right government.
