Iceland, road accident, Snæfellsnes

Two foreign tourists were taken to hospital after their car ended up in the Kleifá river on Sunday, mbl.is reports.

The tourists, both around 30, remain in hospital. Police have no further information about their condition, and the circumstances of the crash are under investigation, said Jónas Hallgrímur Ottósson, chief superintendent with the West Iceland Police.

One tourist was flown by Coast Guard helicopter to a hospital in Reykjavík after the helicopter was dispatched at the highest priority. The other was taken from the scene by ambulance. That passenger got out of the car unaided, while rescuers had to retrieve the other person from the river.

The crash happened on Snæfellsnes Road in southern Snæfellsnes. The road was temporarily closed, causing a long line of traffic, but has since reopened.
