Former Centre Party leader Maud Olofsson has urged the Moderates and Social Democrats to work together to resolve Sweden’s government deadlock, SVT reports. She said the parties’ refusal to cooperate was difficult to understand.

“How unsettled does it have to get before the two parties can take responsibility for Sweden?” Olofsson asked when SVT visited her home outside Örnsköldsvik.

She pointed to cooperation between the Moderates and Social Democrats as a possible way forward, saying she believes their disagreement is over who should become prime minister. The Centre Party, she said, would not have a central role in her proposal.

Olofsson also criticised the idea of a government led by Ulf Kristersson and made up of the four right-wing parties in parliament, which the Sweden Democrats are prepared to let take office. She warned that this would settle only one part of the four-year term, with many issues still to resolve, particularly the budget.
