Firefighter Bergur Vilhjálmsson completed 35 rounds of a demanding firefighter fitness course in 12 hours to raise money for Ljósið, a rehabilitation and support centre for people diagnosed with cancer and their families, mbl.is reported.
The course is used in firefighter recruitment and includes exercises linked to the job. Bergur had planned to complete 40 rounds but said visitors at the fire station and people trying the course slowed his progress. He praised the support and said there had been a great atmosphere at the station.
Each round began with a 40-metre farmer’s walk carrying a total of 48 kilograms, followed by climbing up and down a 20-metre ladder three times. He then dragged a 70-kilogram tyre 40 metres and pulled it back the same distance, before climbing the ladder twice more.
The rest of the course included 20 swings with a 24-kilogram kettlebell, dragging a 70-kilogram training dummy for 40 metres, carrying a 25-kilogram fire hose up and down the ladder, and swinging 20-kilogram dumbbells onto a box.
Bergur said he had not trained specifically for the challenge. He has completed similar strength challenges twice in recent years to support Píeta-samtökin and said his job keeps him in good physical condition. He was sore and tired the day after the effort but said he felt good. The amount raised for Ljósið was due to be announced the following day.
