MATVÍS has expressed serious concern about footage and reporting on conditions for pigs at Stjörnugrís, and called for a thorough investigation. The association’s statement was reported by mbl.is.

MATVÍS said it strongly opposed all mistreatment of animals and called for immediate action on any necessary improvements. It said respect for animals and their welfare were fundamental to responsible food production, and that poor conditions undermined public trust in the industry.

The association also called for oversight bodies to have sufficient funding, staff and powers to follow up on observations and require improvements. It said accounts from a former veterinary inspector, who reportedly described repeated concerns that were not adequately addressed, warranted particular scrutiny.

“It is not enough for inspections to take place; observations must be followed up and shortcomings remedied,” the statement said. MATVÍS said responsibility for acceptable conditions and practices rested with company managers and operators.
