Reykjavík City Council faces scrutiny over vacation payout to former mayor Dagur B. Eggertsson

The Reykjavík City Council is facing scrutiny over the payout of accrued vacation days to the former mayor, Dagur B. Eggertsson, who received nearly ten million Icelandic krónur upon his departure from office. Hildur Björnsdóttir, the leader of the Independence Party in the city council, expressed her understanding of the concerns raised by union leaders regarding the extraordinarily high severance package. Union representatives have criticized the government, highlighting that while there are efforts to discourage regular employees from accumulating vacation days, such rules do not seem to apply to the city’s highest-paid officials.

Hildur indicated the need for transparency in how vacation payments have been managed for all departing city officials, including those from city-owned companies like the Energy Company and Faxaflóahafnir. She acknowledged that it is, indeed, reasonable for employees to voice their discontent when they realize that executives receive more favorable conditions than ordinary staff.

Sólveig Anna Jónsdóttir, the head of the Efling union, remarked on social media that it is concerning how the city has consistently enforced policies to limit vacation carryover among regular workers, while high-ranking officials, including the mayor, appear to have no such restrictions. She emphasized the disparity in treatment by stating, “It’s not the same Jón and Reverend Jón,” criticizing the unequal standards applied in compensating city officials versus standard employees. The issue has ignited discussions about equity in compensation among public sector employees in Iceland.
